B’Nai B’Rith program ending
It happened 50 years ago, when the B’Nai B’Rith, a Jewish lodge dedicated to benevolence, brotherly love, and harmony, wanted an activity for the betterment of the county of Fayette. Its members decided that the best way would be to do something for our youth. The plan was to honor those students who excelled in the classroom and showed signs of good citizenship. To limit the eligibility, it was decided that these scholars must show athletic excellence combined with good sportsmanship and leadership. Thus was born the recognition of the student-athlete. The plan grew to where today we honor an outstanding scholar-athlete in all our Fayette County schools. With matching funds from Penn State Fayette we contribute to a scholarship fund for a needy student; we also honor a Special Olympian from Fayette County.
The plan was enhanced by a sports award night banquet where the awardees are presented by their coaches. The students are called upon to say a few words and are high in praise of their coaches, the lodge and, of course, their parents. The evening is highlighted by a renowned speaker.
It has been a rewarding experience for me to observe these fine youth, men and women. If there are young people who are a detriment to our society these awardees far overshadow them. They will make our society good and decent.
We can be sure that these individuals will improve our quality of life. They are good people and for me to observe these good kids over the years was a rewarding experience. I think the B’Nai B’Rith should be commended for honoring these student athletes.
Mention should be made of our advertisers who have financially supported this program. They allowed us to bring to the attention of our community the outstanding student-athlete who resides in our community.
Unfortunately the B’Nai B’Rith will be unable to continue this fine program. Our aging membership and our diminishing ranks do not allow us to continue. So this 50th anniversary will be our swan song. I feel that we have contributed to the betterment of our area and we have given recognition to our wonderful youth. If you want proof positive of the program’s accomplishments, just check on the over 350 recipients and you will see what good citizens and leaders these young people have become.
