Liberal Democrat speaks out

3 min read

David Gardner, I hope that most Americans do not share your ideas and opinions. I have read many of your letters to the editor. Although I did not agree with them, I did not feel the need to respond to any of those letters. However after reading your letter to the editor, which was published on June 5, entitled “Justice was served,” I felt the need to state my opinion. Your letter was in response to a story about a so-called thug who shot a Pittsburgh police dog and then, in turn, a police officer shot and killed this so-called thug.

What motivated me to respond to your letter was the fact that you then went on and said, and I quote, “I’ll bet this lowlife had a criminal record 10 pages long, lived on welfare, had no father in the house, took drugs – in other words, was the template for the liberal Democratic family in Pennsylvania”.

Sir, I take great offense at your characterization of a typical liberal Democratic family in Pennsylvania.

You speak as though being a liberal Democrat is something undesirable. I would like to remind you that our country has a proud history of socially and environmentally responsible, patriotic, educated, liberal Democratic American citizens that have brought this nation to the forefront of the world.

It was a liberal Democrat that had the foresight to suggest ways to bring this country out of the worst depression it had ever experienced. It was a liberal Democrat that began the end to segregation by taking a politically dangerous stand at the time and integrating the military in the 1940s. It was a liberal Democrat that suggested that we should not ask what this country could do for us, but we should ask what we could do for this country.

It was a liberal Democrat that believed that we were “The Great Society.” That liberal Democrat was responsible for signing into legislation hundreds of programs that today support education, the arts, the medical needs of the elderly and the poor, the beautification of America, and too many more programs to mention. It was a liberal Democrat that said, “The moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped.” It was a liberal Democrat that helped enable this country to have peace and prosperity at the same time in the 1990s.

Mr. Gardner, I am not sure what political party you are affiliated with; however, I would hope that this party does not encourage your beliefs. Your biased description of a liberal Democrat is misrepresented.

In closing I would just like to say that I am proud to be a liberal Democrat. I do not have a criminal record. I have never lived on welfare. I had one of the most wonderful fathers that was married for 56 years to my mother until his death in 2004. I have never taken drugs. I have raised a proud family that will continue to support liberal Democrats that will enable this country to have a social and environmental conscious and prosper at the same time.
