Mother taken advantage of

2 min read

Mary Ellen Burhans, age 97, was an innocent victim in a classic case of elder abuse by her caregiver.

This “caregiver” insidiously manipulated Mary Ellen, telling her how much she loved her and would always care for her. The caregiver stole thousands of dollars and forged numerous checks.

For over two years, this so called “caregiver” robbed this elderly woman. Jewelry was taken, along with a coin collection. This caregiver also “borrowed” money to buy a car.

Mary Ellen Burhans, my mother, died in December, 2009. Beginning September, 2008, I knew that this “caregiver” was a problem, then a danger, but couldn’t prove it until June, 2009.

The Pennsylvania State Police and the Area Agency on Aging Protective Services became involved. Suddenly, this was a criminal case. The Fayette County District Attorney decided to prosecute. These people were heaven sent.

A trial was held in February, 2011, finding the “caregiver” guilty of six different felony counts of forgery and theft. Reality is far different than the hour of “Law and Order” on television. It took over a year and a half for the completion of investigation, delays and the trial.

Our society is transient. We find employment, marry, and settle down, sometimes many miles from our parents. As they get older, assistance will be needed for a variety of different things.

My mother continued to believe that she was competent, because the “caregiver” said so. However, that was very far from the truth, therefore, my mother was taken advantage of by a very devious, manipulative liar and thief.

I would never have been able to bring this thief to justice without the help, knowledge and outstanding abilities of Charles Morrison of the state police; Marie, Paula, and Kathleen of Adult Protective Services; Gene Grimm, assistant district attorney; and the reporters from the HeraldStandard.com.

This case was the first time in Pennsylvania that someone had been prosecuted after the victim’s death!

Thank you all.
