Frustrating search for a second wife

We owe the Associated Press for bringing to us the popular Russian daily Komsomolskaya Pravda’s report on Ramzan Kadyrov, the 34-year-old strongman who rules the Russian republic of Chechnya, and, specifically, his thoughts on women.

Even though bigamy and polygamy are illegal in Russia, Kadyrov is in the market for a second wife, and, indeed, seems to be constantly in the market because he says he’s “always on the lookout for a decent bride.”

The young Kremlin appointee, a proponent of Islamic law, seems to be having trouble finding the right woman – perhaps because, as the two news organizations reported, he has “described women as the property of their husbands and says their main role is to bear children.”

Chechnya has been attempting to impose an Islamic dress code on the local women, and headscarves and modest dress are required in all schools, universities and government offices.

Kadyrov explains that this is only for the women’s own good. He told Komsomolskaya Pravda: “Caucasus natives are hot-tempered guys and they’re fit. So, when a woman is half-naked, we get excited. Wouldn’t you?”

In the heyday of women’s lib in this country, they had a term for this: sexist pig.
