Legislation opposed

2 min read

In your Oct. 2 editorial, “Bad legislation,” you voiced opposition to Senate Bill 961, arguing that it would make access to coroners’ records more restrictive than current law.

Your point is well taken, but three additional points are worth making:

One, your editorial was written after the bill recently passed a Senate committee and was forwarded for consideration to the full Senate, which hasn’t yet voted on the measure.

Two, the House of Representatives, where I serve, has not yet voted on this proposed legislation. In our chamber, it hasn’t even gotten out of committee.

Three, if you want to express concern that your local legislators haven’t spoken out against this horrible piece of legislation, perhaps it would be advisable for you to have a reporter call and ask us about it.

To the best of my knowledge, I do not recall anyone from your newspaper ever calling to interview me on this particular issue before this editorial was written. I would have been glad to share my thoughts with you and your readers had I been contacted.

You might have been inclined to withhold inflicting further lashes on my already scarred back, had you found out that I agree with you 100 percent.

State Rep. Bill DeWeese
