By most accounts, stores open Thanksgiving night did just fine, meaning there will probably be more stores doing the same next year. Are you OK with this? Is it a good thing? Is Thanksgiving going to lose more of its significance or has that battle already been lost?

“I think that greed is at the root of all issues we’re having in America right now. Holidays in and of themselves have become nothing more but a marketing opportunity. I’m going to go with an unpopular statement here and say that it’s not the fault of the executives who decide to stay open on Thanksgiving. Our nation is where it is because the human race has failed to pull together and confront these issues. A place of business cannot operate without willing operators. Imagine what Wal-Mart would do if every employee, in every store decided to go home Thanksgiving day.”

“The shops only open because the public shows up and spends.”

“My son works for Walmart. He worked 12 hours on Thanksgiving. We don’t have to shop on Thanksgiving! Most of the deals are online anyway. We need to get back to family first!”

“The battle has been lost, it’s all about greed, not the true meaning of the holidays. This is one day that people don’t need to shop. With it doing so well, more and more stores will be open, hence losing the true meaning of being thankful, counting your blessings and spending the day with family. The stores may as well just be open 365 days a year. It’s sad.”

“I agree with all the above posts, but the large stores make the sales so great that people go. You can blame the people but consider low-income families with kids. We all need to save when we can. I do.”

“Most sales didn’t start until 8 p.m. We had our dinner at 1 and finished by 4 p.m. I agree the holidays are made to celebrate and be with those you love, but those that make it all about one exact day has obviously never had to arrange theirs around a work schedule. My husband worked swing shifts for nine years. Because we wanted him to be a part of our family celebrations we improvised and ended up with some pretty great traditions because of it.
