Compromise urged
As I was reading the article about the flashing neon sign in front of BB’s Market in Hopwood, I thought to myself that it is so unfortunate that this could not be resolved outside of a township supervisor meeting.
It seems reasonable to me for the owner to stop the sign from flashing at night. The sign will still be visible to passing traffic all night, and Mr. Mercadante stated in the article that he would be satisfied if the sign were on, without flashing, at night.
Asking people to boycott the store because of the sign might not bring about the results that Mr. Mercadante is looking for. A calm discussion in which each party takes a turn to state his needs in a non-aggressive manner, while the other party truly listens, might bring about a solution which can meet the needs of both parties.
The sign being lit at night would meet the needs of Mr. Howard wanting 24 hour visibility of his business, and having the sign not flash while the store is closed would meet the needs of Mr. Mercadante’s need for undisturbed sleep.
