Fayette County’s unemployment rate for October remained unchanged at 8.3 percent. That’s down from 9.7 percent last year. However, the actual number of people in the workforce is down 1,300 from last year. Do you think this is a sign that people are too discouraged to find work or have moved elsewhere to find a job? Or do you think people simply don’t want to work? Are there jobs out there if you really want to work?
“There are no jobs in Fayette County.”
“People have exhausted their benefits and are no longer counted. The government wants you to believe that the number of unemployed has decreased, but this simply is not true. My husband is working in Maryland this week. We do what has to be done.”
“There just aren’t many good-paying jobs in Fayette County.”
“I’m thinging of moving to West Virginia. Morgantown is booming, especially compared to Uniontown. There’s just no comparison.”
“I don’t understand why the government refuses to acknowledge that unemployment numbers may go down, but people are in worse shape because they are losing everything! What in the world are people supposed to do to survive?”
“I think it’s a two-way street. How many people can afford digital cable but can’t afford their gas bill? How many people have an iPhone with unlimited data but don’t have a car to get to work? You start humble and work your way up.”
“People just don’t want to start out at the bottom and work their way up. I started out making $115 a week in 1976, and now I’m making six figures. It took a lot of hard work, but it’s still possible to make it in today’s America. Hard work is the key. A lot of people just don’t want to work hard to get ahead. They want everything given to them.”
“You must be working for your dad or your uncle. The only way to get a ahead today is to know someone of influence who can help you out. It’s definitely not what you know as much as who you know. That’s always been true, but it’s probably more important than it’s ever been.”
