Bands needed for parade
I am a member of the Merrittstown Villagers, who are planning the annual Merrittstown Fourth of July Parade. This is an event that has been held since about 1966 on Independence Day. Not only do we have opening activities and speakers plus, of course, the parade, but we also collect donations for community fireworks to be set off at dusk. This year, as last year, I am at a loss.
Does this sound familiar? I wrote a letter to the editor last year, because we could not get a band to come march in the parade. I sent out letters last fall to see if our parade could be put into a school’s schedule. I have not heard from anyone.
I guess I should have sent a reminder letter out in the spring, but it is not like the Fourth of July is a surprise to anyone, and for 47 years the Merrittstown parade has been a constant each year.
Why can’t we get a band to want to come to this parade? Are we not big enough? It is only a couple of hours, and you would be honoring our country and showing community spirit.
Last year, parents of the Brownsville Area High School Marching Band brought band members to Merrittstown. We were very honored and pleased that they stepped up.
Please, if anyone knows a band that can march in the Merrittstown Fourth of July parade, please contact us at 724-246-1987 or 724-246-1370. We would appreciate any help that the community can offer.
