In her Sunday column, the Herald-Standard’s Jessica Vozel writes that conservatives are all too quick to complain about the costs of food stamps in a proposed Farm Bill but are totally silent about tax breaks for huge agricultural businesses in the same measure. What about food stamps? Do you think they’re needed? Are they too easy to get, and are people spending them on the right things?
“Subsidies were originally intended for family farmers. Now big-ag has bought up a lot of farming operations and turned them into factory farming. Additionally, there are agricultural products that are subsidized to the point that the federal government buys up what the consumers don’t buy. The government buys the excess, guaranteeing a profit for big-ag. No business should be subsidized to the point of guaranteed profit. Ever.”
“I strongly believe that anyone getting welfare needs to have limits. Drug testing is a must.”
“Nationally studies have shown that 84 percent of all recipients pass drug tests at a cost of millions of dollars. Just another form of racism and classism. Perhaps anyone that receives a subsidy should also be tested? That would included the home mortgage interest deduction/subsidy, which costs significantly more in lost tax revenue than food stamps. Then we could drug test all the college kids getting subsidized loans for college. Then we could drug test everyone that had any tax deduction/subsidy on their income tax.”
“Food stamps are way too easy to get. The Access card is totally abused. You can buy an Access card for enough money for someone to get drugs tonight. No one checks ID to prove you are the person receiving the Access card. I’ve seen people use three different Access cards all at the same time and place. Nothing was ever said to them. I wonder if any truly belonged to them.”
“How about we get rid of federal welfare and any form of business subsidies… period. Most conservatives I know would be fine with eliminating all deductions and lowering and flattening the tax structure. Also, making everyone pay their fair share, like the half the population who pay no income taxes. Let them pay something, anything. I’ll settle for $10.”
“I’m all for drug testing, however, what is it going to cost to drug test welfare people. Consider how many people are on welfare, which is a whole other story itself! And who’s gonna pay for all the testing?”
