A 16-year-old boy stabbed and slashed 21 students, critically wounding five at Franklin Regional High School outside Pittsburgh Wednesday. This is just the latest in a number of school violence incidents across the country over the past several years. Is there anything that schools should be doing to prevent such incidents? Can these things happen anywhere? How safe do you think the schools are in your community?

“If the security guard was armed it would have been over a lot sooner.”

“Yes. More guns. That is the answer.”

“You definitely want a security guard opening fire in a crowded hallway. Sounds like a fantastic solution.”

“‘Armed’ doesn’t mean ‘gun.’ The security guard was 60 years old and couldn’t take down a 16-year-old. He could have used something to stop that boy, even a stun gun.”

“Why is it always the school’s responsibility? Why not look at the parents/home life as well! Let’s not forget here that we have students seven hours/day. There are things that we cannot control. Schools cannot become prisons for a lack of parenting skills.”

“Armed guards could have shot the boy as soon as he pulled the knife and even killed him if necessary to save others lives. Arm the teachers also to defend students. They won’t do any of this, so parents that can should take their children out of public schools.”

“There should not be any gun-free zones in schools or anywhere else. This is committing suicide. Otherwise, get used to your children being in danger.”

“More killings will be coming.”

“Shoot him as soon as you think he’s doing something. What could possibly go wrong there?”

“Since when have guns been allowed in private schools?”

“Guns should be allowed everywhere. Shootings always go down where guns are allowed.”

“More guns is safe. Look at Switzerland.”

“We might not be able to prevent every shooting, but we should be able to prevent at least some of these from happening. We need to take a really hard look at this problem and see what we can come up with.”
