By a 7-2 vote, the Uniontown Area School Board directors agreed Monday to advertise for armed security guards to be placed at schools in the district. District officials said they will advertise for retired municipal or state police officers for the positions. How comfortable are you with the decision to place armed security guards in Uniontown schools? Do think the guards are definitely needed? Do you have any concerns about the guards?

“Unfortunately it’s a sign of the times. I’m in favor of it.”

“I think it’s a good thing as long as they are trained professional and not just JO off the street with lethal weapons training. I’m not knocking ACT 235 certified but a higher level is needed with our kids. And I have nothing against the elderly or retired but maybe get some young blood in there 30s 40s with a FBI background check.”

“That’s pretty scary!”

“I support it 100 percent, with the proper certifications. ACT 235 is a requirement.”

“Some form of advanced training, and some younger officers are needed.”

“I think its a great idea.”

“It may be an awful idea. A year or two ago, a student supposedly went out of control, attacked a student, choked out a teacher, and attacked the security guard. What if that student got a hold of the security officer’s gun if they had one? What could have happened then?! It seems like the possibilities of more danger outweighs the intimidation of guns present. It’s awful to think that security or anyone else in the school would have such easy access to a deadly weapon that so many try to keep out of the school in the first place.”

“Can’t wait til a year or so from now when they are asking what could have kept that student from getting the guard’s gun.”

“I completely agree! I see it more as a liability. Metal detectors at entrances and hand held for buses. I commend UASD for their use of them. A taser armed guard in addition maybe.”

“What a shame that armed guards have to be in our schools daily.”
