A federal judge rules last week that college athletes must be paid for their services. The ruling is expected to have a big impact on college athletics. Do you agree with the judge that athletes should be paid, or is a scholarship for room, board and tuition enough? Will the ruling be good or bad for college athletics?

“College athletics is big business. Millions are paid to attend games and advertising. Pay them what they are worth with no scholarships. They can then pay for their own tuition and expenses.”

“I don’t think they should be paid. I always said, they play for the love of the game, not the money.”

“Nobody plays for the love of the game. They play for a scholarship, for a chance at a big pro contract, for money and fame. And as colleges make billions off the work of these men, then yes they should get a cut of that.”

“I don’t think they should get paid. Most of them don’t finish college before hitting the big leagues anyway. They’re supposed to be getting an education, not a job. Colleges don’t pay their engineering students or medical students.”

“The money these colleges make off these players is crazy. They pay the coaches higher than NFL coaches, so why not pay these players? Most of them will never make it to the NFL, and when they play football and with school there is no way that they can work.”

“To pay them means they are employees at a non-profit university, then since they are employees, the IRS will tax them. Maybe they will start to tax their scholarships. Hmmmm. Seems like another way for the government to get their hands on another pile of money they previously were not able to touch. Call me pessimistic.”

“No.”

“Pay these kids. The NCAA makes hundreds of millions of dollars on these kids every year.”

“The scholarships should be enough if they get paid. Now what do they have to look forward to if the NFL drafts them. They’re all spoiled brats.”

“Scholarships are pay!”

“Not everyone gets paid through scholarships or at all, guys. My daughter runs for Pitt and gets nothing. Her recruited teammates get book scholarships, not tuition. These situations are common. Please remember that not every sport is football and basketball.”
