According to a recent study, the U.S. has about 5 percent of the world’s population yet uses about 80 percent of the world’s opiate supply mainly through such drugs as codeine, morphine and OxyContin. The drugs are controversial, though, because they are extremely addictive and frequently overused. Have you ever used an opioid? Do you know anyone who has had a problem with them. Are they prescribed too frequently or are they necessary for many people to live pain-free lives?

“Nothing stops severe pain like an opiate. I’ve taken them many times and never had a problem stopping. It’s to the point that non-abusers have a hard time getting a doctor to prescribe them.”

“Opiates are killers. It’s time to use safe cannabis for pain.”

“I don’t believe that.”

“What about Rush Limbaugh. hero to uber-ultra-neo-conservatives. He was farming about a hundred doctors. He should have been charged with a a class A felony, but when caught he vanished into rehab. He was never charged. Any questions?”

“I never used codeine or morphine, but I used OxyContin for about nine months for very severe back pain from injury. If used as prescribed, chances of getting addicted are slim. I was on 20 milligram Oxy’s too.”

“The big problem today is most doctors won’t prescribe these drugs no matter how much pain you’re in. I just got over shingles and the pain was unbearable, my doctor finally prescribed 5 milligram of OxyContin once a day. I told him they are a 1- hour pill, what am I supposed to do for the other 12 hours? He said that was all he could prescribe to me. Well he is no longer my doctor. People should not have to lay in pain, when there are drugs out there that can help. True they can be addicted, and nobody really wants that. But I have yet to find anyone that enjoys living in pain, to the point they have tears in their eyes either. Fighting the addiction is a lot easier afterwards, than living in constant severe pain.”

“Doctors had to do something. You had normal, everyday Americans getting hooked on these things. And once they were hooked, they started doing other illegal drugs like heroin. They needed to get high. Now at least that kind of stuff won’t be happening as much as it was happening.”

“My wife was on Vicodin for years, and she never had any problems. She just quit taking the pills and that was that. I think these people who became addicted proably had problems with drugs before. It’s a shame everyone has tos sutffer because of them.”
