Cleveland Browns wide receiver Andrew Hawkins said he was moved to wear a T-shirt protesting shootings in Ohio out of fear something similar could one day happen to his 2-year-old son. However, Cleveland police union president Jeff Follmer called his actions “pathetic” and told cleveland.com that Hawkins is “disrespecting the police on a job that we had to do and make a split-second decision.” Do you agree with Follmer and think Hawkins was wrong to wear the T-shirt or do you think Hawkins was within his rights to wear the T-shirt?

“He could run around naked for all I care. It’s none of my business.”

“It’s his right to wear the tee. It’s the officers right to ban the NFL if he wants. That’s all.”

“I could care less what they wear. It’s another reason for me to not give a toot about pro sports.”

“Why aren’t they getting fined. I might be wrong, but didn’t they fine players for wearing a cross in the past? Or a religious logo.”

“It really is disgusting what these players can and can’t do.”

“I think it’s pathetic that the police union would passively threaten the athletes that protest their actions. ‘We protect their stadium.’ Yes sir, you do because it’s your job. I think that the police union would be better served to instead say, ‘We are supporting the investigation into these shootings. It is our job to protect and serve all citizens and are saddened when these incidents happen.”‘

“Many of us are concerned about our officers and the citizens who feel threatened by the police. The unions are not doing their officers any favors when they take a less than sympathetic stance when citizens question the actions of bad cops. Every profession has imperfect members. No profession is served to protect their bad or ineffective members. Just ask the Catholic church.”

“The Westboro Baptist Church says and does more offensive things under their rights.”

“Good for Hawkins. Law enforcement can’t afford to be so thin skinned.”

“I think the police union has to understand their money comes from a taxpayer.”

“I think that professional football players need to understand that the stadiums they play in were built with taxpayers’ money. I think all sports venues should be built using owners money then maybe the players couldn’t be paid as well. If they want to protest they should do it outside the stadium on their own time.”
