Brownsville board ripped

1 min read

The Brownsville School Board, once again, is demonstrating its total lack of understanding of the functions of a free press.

Revenue from the publication of public notices is not intended as a reward or punishment for a local news media company. The notices are paid for by public money and their sole purpose is to inform the public.

The school board may not like what the newspaper writes, but they are not a private company. They should not order checks to be written only to people or companies they like. There are other methods available to the school board for countering what they consider to be negative news.

It’s sad that the board members seem to have no respect for the First Amendment and one of the basic freedoms on which our democracy was founded. Dictators throughout history have controlled the news media. is this what the board members want? It’s petty, immature, arrogant and counterproductive. it makes you wonder what they want to hide?
