Rehiring of coach urged

2 min read

The Jefferson-Morgan School Board voted recently to open the varsity girl’s basketball head coaching position.

This coach was “Coach of the Year,” last season after taking over a team that had won only one game before she was hired. They won a playoff game which hasn’t happened in decades, and returned to the playoffs again this year with a winning record, which hasn’t happened in decades with a very young team ranked 13th in the WPIAL.

All the parents knew the coach was going to be fired. They packed the board room, and the motion wasn’t even on the agenda. (Sneaky?). The board had met the previous Monday to discuss the issue in the athletic committee, where an executive session was held that only five board members were privy to what was discussed about the coach.

Why is the board opening the position before the season was even over? That doesn’t even follow board athletic policies. Typically after the season, all winter coaches meet with the athletic director and athletic committee to talk about the season.

The board won’t meet or tell the coach why they are opening the position. It seems the few parents who yell and scream will decide what’s best for the team.

I heard 11 different families in the room supporting the coach, saying how sad a few board members cow to a couple of parents.

Please JM let the light shine in. Support the best girls’ basketball coach you ever had. Don’t let the parents who yell and scream and complain ruin the program for all the girls. Rehire Coach Hildebrand!
