Local columnist mistaken in attack

By John Lucas 3 min read

Recently I had the pleasure of reading another “On the Left” commentary by Al Sharpton. Opps, I mean Al Owens. Regardless of the topic, this local writer has to get in his “digs” about white males.

In his latest assault he writes, “Wanting people to be something other than who they are is not the role of any political party. Especially since that party has great difficulty attracting people who aren’t white and male.”

So, what are you saying Al? It’s not like you haven’t said it before. No matter what the topic, you have to throw in that “indictment” against white males.

You know there’s a label for what you’re doing. It’s not exclusive to white males.

Well, contrary to what you might think, I know about a few things, and I’m a white guy. I just don’t think blatant or subtle racist stuff needs to be vented in the Herald-Standard.

Obviously you don’t share my beliefs in that regard.

Let me “pull your coat” to something. White dudes aren’t all named “Gomer.” Just like black dudes aren’t all named “Amos and Andy.” Didn’t you know that.

Granted Rick Perry has this habit of opening his mouth to change feet, but I kind of like the guy. He might not be perfect, but then who is? At least he’s “real” and Texas loves him. Somehow I figure that if he was my neighbor, I could borrow his lawnmower, and we’d share a six-pack, if mine wasn’t working.

What did he say that was so wrong?

Since you claim the American Psychological Association has “debunked” gay conversion therapies, when did the American Medical Association identify that some portion of the brain (maybe the frontal lobe, or the medulla oblongata) sometimes has this additional nodule that causes people to experience confusion regarding their gender.

Oh, I get it. Gender identity isn’t: physiological, it’s psychological. If that’s what it is, then it deals with the mind and behavior. Doesn’t “lifestyle” fit in that category?

The “task force” you mentioned: that found reparation therapy efforts could lead to distress and anxiety would reach the same conclusion regarding any therapy for anything.

Isn’t that why people go into therapy? So they can work their way through all the distress and anxiety?

Regarding your “baldness,” the only way your behavior could contribute to your baldness is if you are constantly pulling out your own hair. Aside from me calling you what I believe you are, what other behavioral issue would cause you to do that?

You’ve compounded your charlatan interpretation of science by inferring opposition to homosexuals is some “white” thing. Remember you said the Republicans only attract people who are white and male.

Ask some of your black community leaders, religious leaders or just regular people, how they feel about homosexuality and marriage equality. You might discover as I have, that a great many aren’t too supportive of it, either.

Ah, but that doesn’t matter. You have to blame white males for everything and not only am I getting pretty sick of being “bum beefed,” I’m getting sick of subtle racism disguised as journalism.

I guess this means I can’t borrow your lawnmower?
