Importance of voting stressed

By Soni Shaner Mancuso 3 min read

You’ll be given the opportunity this November to cast your vote. I want to share some things that you as a voter need to remember.

Your vote is your voice as an American citizen. This is your opportunity to be heard, to hold elected officials accountable for their decisions and to have a say in important issues that impact your community. Unfortunately, the turnout of our voting population on Election Day continues to decrease.

As the Democratic Party takes on new leadership, Fayette County citizens have the opportunity to become involved and help our county make progress.

It is important for the public to know what goes on behind the scenes and who is truly working “for the people.” Do we know who the big contributors are behind political candidates, fueling their campaigns term after term, influencing contracts and other employment opportunities?

Contracts that could be bringing Fayette County much needed employment are being handed to other counties while benefiting politicians and their immediate families. Each political candidate is required to list their donations in their campaign finance report. Campaign finance reports are available for your information at the Fayette County Election Bureau upon request.

Recently there has been a decrease of funding for our public schools as well as cutting important programs such as music, art and physical education. Drillers are being allowed to drill almost everywhere and threatening our environmental quality. There has been a decrease in funding for social service providers yet an increase in substance abuse, school violence and the rate of recidivism. Farmers continue to work tirelessly to support themselves and supply our community with safe, locally grown foods with decreasing support.

Knowledge is power. Educating ourselves on our elected officials and candidates will give voters the power to make much needed positive change. We have this ability, however, it requires becoming educated, involved and taking action. To take time from our busy life to vote on Election Day is crucial as it directly impacts our life today and future generations.

As your elected Fayette County State Democratic Committeewoman, it is my position to be the line of communication between the citizens and the elected officials. Many people have become frustrated with our democracy and see no reason to cast their ballot.

This is not the answer to help Fayette County.

Know your candidates and cast your vote.

I am looking forward to addressing issues of concern with our elected officials and educating voters on the importance of their vote and involvement. Please feel free to contact me with any questions on the election process, voter registration, or if you would like to join me in being proactive for progress and change.
