More and more employers these days are complaining that young workers lack the work ethic of older workers, making it hard to fill jobs in some cases. Do you think the complaints are valid, or are they overblown? How bad is the problem here in Fayette County?
“Just look around you. It’s all over.”
“I believe it’s a nationwide problem, not just here in Fayette County. Work ethic is something taught from a very young age, and I feel that’s greatly lacking by most of today’s parents. Today’s young workers show little to no respect to leaders and no loyalty to employers, and rarely take critical praise because they’re under the incorrect assumption it’s all about them.”
“I’m part of this ‘younger’ generation, and I have fantastic work ethic. However, I expect to be compensated for my hard work and experience. That is why there is a lack of company loyalty within our generation. We have massive amounts of student loan debt, so we go to the employers that will compensate us. Why should I work for someone paying me $40k if someone else is offering $65k for the same job?”
“This is not a new or growing problem, and it is not exclusive to the young or the current generation. In the ’60s, the old heads complained about the lazy hippies. In the ’80s, the former hippies complained about the lazy kids with big hair and leather jackets. Nothing has changed. Nothing is worse. In fact, I’m a bit sick of hearing my predecessors complain about Millennials when the baby boomers have ruined nearly everything they’ve gotten their hands on.”
“This group of 18-25 these days are lazy and want everything for nothing. But that’s how society has raised them.”
“They are so valid. It is so sad that that generation is going to be running our country one day if we have one left.”
“The point about loyalty to an employer is from a bygone era. Ask folks at Hatfield about that notion. It is critical to be looking out for yourself. Always be developing new skills and be looking for new opportunities.”
“The younger generation probably does have a lot to learn, but the same thing could be said about every generation that comes along. No one ever thought the baby boomers would be workaholics so you never know what’s goign to happen down the road.”
