There’s been another mass murder, this time in California. A 22-year-old man went on a rampage Friday night near the University of California, Santa Barbara, killing six people and injuring 13 others. Can anything be done to prevent these types of incidents? What about stricter gun laws or tougher mental health measures?
“One thing we need is better mental health care, first of all. And, yes, it is far too easy to purchase a gun. I’m a liberal, and, yes, I have a gun, I’m not worried about a stricter law, because I’ve done nothing wrong to make it harder for me to get one.”
“Knives are also way too easy to purchase.”
“I heard he killed three people with a hammer and a knife. Ran over some of his victims with a car. Killed three with a gun. Why ban just guns? What about the hammer, the knife and the car? Do we ban them, also?”
“When something like this happens, the media always portrays the gun as the evil tool. What about the person behind the gun?”
“I myself am sick of hearing every time there is an incident like this that the first thing attacked is ‘guns.’ Take the guns off everyone. That way, only the government and criminals will have them. About 15 years ago, my cousin was stabbed to death in Florida, and five years ago my brother was murdered by being stabbed in the heart, but do you ever hear anyone say we need stricter knife laws?”
“If a person wants to cause harm to someone else, they will find some way of carrying it out. So what do we do, ban everything that can be used to kill someone? Stop trying to take our guns away every time someone gets shot.”
“Granted, a lot of parties use an event like this to push their own agenda, but what I see from gun enthusiasts is by far the worst. Instead of exhibiting any shred of empathy, pro-gun parties view a tragedy like this as a rallying cry, a call to arms, if you will. They flood message boards with inane comments about taking away hammers and knives, blaming video games, or shrug it all off to the flavor of the month, mental illness. Honestly, how sick is it that six people died, and someone’s first thought was to fire up MS Paint to make a picture with a photo of the killer quoting his bloodthirsty rantings and outlining the tools he used to kill, only to push a pro-gun and anti-liberal agenda? That’s fanaticism.”
