Fayette residents should demand ‘clean, moral government’

2 min read

How many good, capable people in Fayette County are discouraged from seeking political office and are prepared to suffer the onslaught of negativity that permeates the election process?

How many voters choose to forgo their right to vote because they are disgusted by the dirty tricks that have become part of the election process?

We are guaranteed freedom of speech by our constitution but that freedom does not extend to slander and outright lies. Under the name “Anonymous,” fliers are distributed that malign political office holders and those seeking election. “Anonymous” is cowardly and subversive, a phantom that cannot be confronted.

Recent “Anonymous” fliers attacking local office holders and candidates are shocking, obscene and damage the democratic process. Fayette County is rife with those tactics and we, as voters, should regard anyone who anonymously attacks our elected officials and candidates as beneath our contempt.

The recent general election sunk to new levels. County commissioner, school board and municipal government meetings are often out of control. Civility and common courtesy are left at the door. No one who chooses to serve the public as an elected official is deserving of personal attacks.

Policies, ideology, decisions are fair game. But attacks on personality, family and appearance are not.

Fellow Fayette County residents, let us elevate the ton of politics in our county to serve as an example of clean, moral government.
