Jon Stewart, host of Comedy Central’s Daily Show, said in a recent interview that he felt there were more important things former president George W. Bush could be doing with his time than painting a “still life,” comparing him to former president Jimmy Carter who, in Stewart’s words, is “out in Africa, like, pulling Guinea worms out of children’s feet trying to cure them.” Do you think this is an unfair criticism of Bush and that he deserves to spend his time relaxing after his presidency? Or do you think he should, like Carter, George H. Bush and Bill Clinton before him, serve as an ambassador to the presidency and promote U.S. diplomacy and goodwill around the world?

“It is his life. Let him live it how he wants. None of us would appreciate the public telling us how we should live, especially at his age.”

“Jon Stewart is a good comedian, but yeah I agree it’s none of his business to tell someone how they should spend their retirement. George Bush was a terrible president, but he doesn’t deserve that. No one deserves to be ridiculed for what they do in their spare time. That’s no different than walking up to a complete stranger on the street and saying, “You should do more or you should donate to this organization” They will help out or donate if they want to. The man’s out of office. He’s a civilian. He’s no longer running the country. It’s a free country. Leave him alone, Jon. We should be more worried about what Congress is doing than worrying about what a retired president does in his spare time.”

“He’s been very gracious in not overpowering the present administration which would be easy to do. He keeps a low profile and has never been a publicity seeker like other former presidents. Why does he have to do something? Everyone else gets to retire!”

“Never believed he had it in him to do good works. Oh well, to each his own.”

“I love Jon Stewart, but it’s really not his place or business to compare former presidents’ lives.”

“Criticism is criticism. It’s neither fair nor unfair. Jon Stewart IS A COMEDIAN! As for wanting ‘W’ speaking for us any longer as a country, he’s made too many hate us already.”

“He should have time to do diplomacy and goodwill, with plenty left over for his artistic endeavors.”

“Reagan went to his ranch because he was getting seriously ga-ga. The further Bush stays away from the public eye the happier everybody, including the Republicans, will be.”

“He did his time as president, was not afraid to get things done. Leave him alone. Retired and owes us nothing more.”
