Spurgeon praised

1 min read

The Fourth Estate is minus a true champion with the retirement of Calkins media executive Tom Spurgeon, whose 1991-96 tenure as publisher of the Herald-Standard is synonymous with an era of journalistic excellence.

As publisher, Tom understood the value of good print journalism to the community — and he “walked the walk” in backing it up.

The award-winning work done by me and other reporters during his tenure was directly attributable to Tom’s unswerving commitment to the highest journalistic principles.

He was the real deal as a newspaperman.
