Brownsville cleanup planned

By Jim Carroll 2 min read

Since I became a member of the Brownsville Planning Commission, I sure get a lot of complaints about the condition of the town.

Other than the questions about the blighted downtown and what is going to happen there, the biggest complaints I hear are:

“This town looks like (various expletives deleted).

“The streets are way too dirty.”

“Don’t they ever cut grass around here?”

“Can’t something be done about the litter?”

I’m sure that you are aware of how badly the town looked last year with weeds, uncut grass and litter. This has an impact on those who do not live in town as well since the other common complaint I hear from non residents is “How can you live in a town where such an unkempt look is tolerated?”

Well, I am asking for help from the residents to lessen the impact of this blight and get back to the good old days of Brownsville’s springtime when “Clean up, Fix up, Paint up” was how the citizenry showed pride in their town.

On Saturday, May 9, BARC (Brownsville Area Revitalization Corp) will be conducting it annual cleanup of Brownsville. They will meet at  9 a.m. in Snowden Square.

They will begin at Snowden Square and continue outward toward Market, Water and High streets as well as Albany Road. Your volunteer help to clean up our town would be appreciated.

For those of you unable to help in such a large scale manner, perhaps you would consider cleaning up around your place of residence. Sweeping the sidewalks in front of your house, picking up the trash, even sweeping the street in front of your home to remove cinders and debris from the winter into piles that could be hauled away by the street department would go a long way toward helping our town rid itself of one of the by products of blight and make it look a little more desirable to all.

Perhaps you could even help those who are elderly or disabled clean up the area around their homes as well. The purpose is to help our town get away from the image of being a dirty and trashy town.

Jim Carroll is a resident of Brownsville.
