The environment minister for Zimbabwe says the American dentist, Walter Palmer, who killed Cecil a beloved lion a month ago, should be extradited to face justice. The minister described Palmer as a “foreign poacher.” The killing has outraged many in Zimbabwe and across the world. Palmer admitted killing Cecil, but said he hired professional guides and believed all the necessary hunting permits were in order. Do you think Palmer should be extradited to face jail in Zimbabwe? Or do you think Palmer did nothing wrong and should be allowed to remain free here in the United States?

“He should answer for his crime.”

“Yes, Palmer needs to answer for what he did.”

“Here is the deal. Zimbabwe wants to put on a show for its people. They know America would never extradite a citizen to their dirt hole of a country. We refuse, their leaders look strong and angry, and we look bad. If we were to actually send Walter, they would freak out. Why? Because they make a lot of money off of legal big-game hunting and convicting a guy who paid for a licenses and used government authorized guides would kill their entire big-game hunting industry. So, to answer the question? Did he do something morally repugnant? I don’t care if the lion was named Cecil or an actual man killer, hunting for sport is gross. Did he do something illegal? Likely not, but we should send him back anyway.”

“This man hired these guides believing that they had the necessary permits. He should not be punished for their actions.”

“Wrong, ignorance is no excuse.”

“Environmental minister? The Zimbabwe people could care less and do not understand why the American people are so upset. These lions and other big games are a threat to the village people. They have bigger problems over there then a dead lion!”

“Maybe the people you know are upset, but I have also heard from people over there and they were not as upset as the people of the U.S. Yes, maybe it was sad because it was a well-known lion, and he brought tourists that just came to see him. But most of these people only get meat when someone pays for the big-game shoot. The meat feeds people in these villages. The guides that were paid big money are at fault for the shoot and the people not getting the meat because the guides tried to hide what they did.”

“Not true. I have contacts in Zimbabwe who are very upset.”

“Extradite him. This isn’t the first time he has done this and lied about it. Maybe some jail time will teach him and other poachers that it’s not gonna be tolerated.”

“Yes, Palmer should definitely pay for the crime he committed.”
