Secretary of Defense Ash Carter ushered in a new era in the U.S. military recently when he announced that all combat roles will be opened to women. The announcement was criticized by many who said women shouldn’t be used in combat roles. Others said it was about time that women were treated equally in the military. Do you think this is a good thing or will it put both men and women soldiers at further risk than normal? Who do you think? Is it a good thing for women? What about men? Does it make things more dangerous for men and women soldiers on the battlefield?
“It will definitely put our soldiers, both men and women at more risk. It’s already dangerous now. Why make it more dangerous.”
“If the females in combat are able to fight at the same level as a male, and have the ability to carry the same amount of equipment or carry a wounded 220-pound soldier off of a battle field, I’m good with it. I don’t forsee many women being able to do those things, so I am not sexist, just realisic. In a battle, every person has to be able to carry their weight, or they compromise the safety of the entire team. I just hope everyone is realistic about what’s needed in combat.”
“Let’s be realistic, most women are not qualified to take out a man who is above 150 pounds unless she is heavier than that and well-trainned. I’m just trying to be realistic.”
“So, four 5.56 rounds fired into a man by a woman would not “take him out” just the same as if fired by a man?”
“It’s a terrible idea. You have to wonder who comes up with these things.”
“This is a huge issue right now. Im a Marine and I say if they can kill the enemy then train em and put em in combat. The women who have that mental toughness will make it. The ones that who most likely will not try to join those combat units. At least that’s the way it should be.”
“As long as the requirements to serve in one of those positions is not lowered, I am all for it.”
“We’ll have to see how this works out. You just can’t put anyone in combat, whether it’s a man or a woman. They have to be trained and know what they’re doing.”
