The Herald-Standard recently reported that with the closing of the Fayette County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ shelter, more stray dogs are popping up across Fayette County. Do you think Fayette County needs another animal shelter, especially one to house homeless animals in weather like we’ve been having this winter?

“Yes, they need to get something for these poor animals.”

“Yes we do! Fayette Friends can only take in so many. They are hard-working people.”

“If there is another one opened, make sure it’s run by animal lovers, Someone has to care what happens to these animals!”

“Seriously? Yes. There is a perfectly good building there. Someone with the know-how should figure out how to get it going again. However, people need to be put in place who do not play politics and whose priorities are the animals in need.”

“Absolutely! There not only needs to be another shelter in this county, but there needs to be some serious education about animal rights and caretaker responsibilities. Unfortunately, until the laws concerning animals change, the abuse and neglect will continue.”

“The lawmakers need to step up to the plate and be the voice for the voiceless animals of Pennsylvania! The current HPO is overwhelmed and does the best that she can do with the limited time and resources that she has. There is a small group of extremely dedicated volunteers who fight for the animals of Fayette and surrounding counties, but until the laws change, they can only do very little to help.”

“Fayette County definitely needs a new facility ran by caring people who are in it for the animals. Education is key, but belittling and bullying will do nothing to help get any animal into a good home.”

“I believe the SPCA building is OK, but the ground is not. I can’t recall everything that is wrong, but it will cost more to fix it than to build a new kennel. I can remember the sewage constantly seeping up through the dogs outdoor runs.”

“Fayette County is so far behind in providing services to residents. I have four kittens under my shed that someone dropped off. It is so cold. But, no one to call to collect them. Greene County does better in giving community services. A dog shelter is needed and funded by Fayette County, but all the commissioners know is to fight each other, like five year olds.

“There is a lien against the SPCA building, and it is not fit for animals. The building and ground has disease and would take way too much money to get it in order. We need a county-run facility with a HPO full time. Also our law enforcement and local politicians need to support animal cruelty laws and uphold them. Additionally it cannot be a no kill shelter. Some animals unfortunately are too bad off to be saved! Just my two cents!”
