A little love goes a long way

By Emily Behm 3 min read

As we enter the year of 2017, there are many things that we should remember and reflect upon.

2016 can be described by many as the “worst year ever,” and that description certainly fits the year I have had. From losing my cousin, two classmates, a teacher and my dear grandfather, to almost losing my aunt and great-uncle, and to having an ill grandmother, I lost what sight of what is truly important in life.

I felt my life spiral out of control, and I pushed away everyone that I love and care about. This letter is to help put the important things in perspective to everyone during this time of new beginnings and healing.

Life is precious, yet very short. Remember that every moment on this earth is a gift, and it can be taken from anyone at any given moment. When someone tells you to live each day like it’s your last one, that means that you should enjoy every second that you can, and let things roll off of your back.

Remember that if a situation is not going to affect you five years from now, you should not spend more than five minutes being upset over it.

Remember that you are important, too.

You cannot help others if you cannot help yourself. Pushing your own well-being to the side, whether it be physical or emotional, can be quite damaging. Taking time for yourself is by no means “selfish.”

Remember to be kind to everyone you meet, as you never know what someone may be going through. Be patient with those who “push your buttons,” as that person may have had a terrible past and could be hurting. You may be surprised at how amazing that person really is once you get to know their story. Have compassion.

And finally, remember to love with all of your heart. Love your family, love your friends, love your neighbors, love those who are different from you, love those who you pass on the street, and love those who have wreaked havoc on your life. All of these people are writing on the wall in your life, and even if some people have caused you hurt, all they may need is a little love.

So as you enter the new year, remember to take care of you, to cherish every moment on this earth, and to love everyone around you. You may find positive changes in your career, your health, your relationships, and even the world around you. If everyone followed these simple steps, the world could change for the better. Remember: it starts with you.
