Gov. Haley praised
Having observed how deftly and competently she has led her state through crises, I was confident that the response to the State of the Union Address offered by South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley would be reflective of the dignified and distinguished lady and skilled young conservative leader that she is, and she did not disappoint.
In noting that “during anxious times, it can be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices,” she landed a powerful blow against the extremist forces which threaten to tear apart the Republican Party, those who rely on anger, rage, insult, and scapegoating to make their case, seeking to appeal to the worst within us. This is the “vision” which is offered by Donald Trump and Ted Cruz.
Naturally, Trump’s reaction was to insult and distort, falsely asserting that Gov. Haley is “very weak on illegal immigration.” I suppose he will also demand that she apologize and threaten to file a lawsuit against her for defamation of his non-existent character.
It was a rare stroke of genius for the GOP leadership to allow Gov. Nikki Haley to address the nation in her own eloquent words. She has gone a long way in demonstrating that she is a leader for our time. The party would be enhanced if she were named to the Republican ticket as vice president if one of the candidates who is in touch with reality should be nominated for president.
