Lohr blasts Halvorson

By Dave Lohr 3 min read

As an elected official, and one who has been politically involved for many years, I am well-acquainted with the way that campaigns are run. Some strive to be open and aboveboard, while others stoop to less-than-honorable tactics. Sadly, this has been my experience with Art Halvorson, who is running for Congress.

On Thursday, March 3, one of Mr. Halvorson’s campaign workers knocked on my father’s door. Upon learning my father’s identity, the worker stepped away and returned with Mr. Halvorson himself. Together, Mr. Halvorson and his worker proceeded to stage a “photo-op,” taking a picture of my father with Mr. Halvorson. This photograph was later posted by Mr. Halvorson on his Facebook page, mentioning both my father and me by name.

My father was unaware that his likeness was going to be used in this way, and he certainly did not know that my name would be mentioned. This speaks to the character of Mr. Halvorson and those supporting him. It troubles me greatly that the Mr. Halvorson would be so deceitful as to use my family connections to imply that I am supporting him. To use a senior citizen to accomplish this deceit is beyond shameful.

I am sorry to say that Mr. Halvorson’s use of unsavory tactics is not new. In the last election cycle, Mr. Halvorson campaigned on Sept. 11 wearing his military uniform. While I applaud Mr. Halvorson for his service, he is not entitled to wear his military uniform in retirement except for the following reasons: occasions of a military ceremony, at patriotic parades on national holidays, or occasions in which active or reserve units are taking part, or at social or other functions when the invitation has been influenced by the member’s active military service. Further, campaigning in uniform does not meet any of these requirements, and, as such, is certainly not proper and borders on illegal.

So, to clear the air, let me state unequivocally that my support is for Bill Shuster in the race for Congress in the 9th Congressional District. He is an eight-term congressman with a proven track record. As a Fayette County commissioner, I am in a unique position to assess the benefits this region has reaped from Mr. Shuster’s efforts on our behalf. As chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, he is in a position to continue to move the region forward. Mr. Shuster is a true conservative, who remains true to his principles and dedicated to the best interests of his constituents.
