Remember to go out and vote

2 min read

Local editorials from 50 years ago are being reprinted every Monday and Tuesday in this column. This editorial appeared in the Evening Standard, a predecessor of the Herald-Standard, on Nov. 7, 1966.

Political leaders have worked themselves into a great state of activity to counteract what they consider the apathy of voters.

Gubernatorial candidates from both parties have flooded Pennsylvania with every means of communication possible to get out the vote on Tuesday. In the county races for the state House of Representatives and state Senate candidates have used newspapers, radio, telephone and door-to-door techniques of meeting and greeting the people.

We hope the fear of apathy expresses nothing more than a lot of politicians, running scared races, resorting to exaggeration to get out the party faithful. Whatever the Impact of this election tomorrow, the citizen’s duty remains, constant: Every good citizen should participate in Tuesday’s general election. There are important decisions to be made.

The voter will be electing the people who make the laws of Pennsylvania and who administer, those laws. The Evening Standard has endorsed its candidates, it urges the support of Constitutional Amendment No. 3-A and asks that a “no” vote be recorded on Amendment No. 6-A.

We believe that Raymond Shafer, the present lieutenant governor and the Republican candidate for governor, is our best bet for the next four years.

We endorse his candidacy, because we want to keep Pennsylvania moving as it has done in the past four years and feel that Mr. Shafer has the experience and the qualifications to retain those forward strides.

To be most effective the conscientious voter should inform himself of the qualifications of the candidates. Vote for those candidates best suited for office. Choose y o u r candidates on the basis of ability, reliability, integrity, honesty, willingness to work and consideration of the local problems.

This is an election in which you should not be led. This is the time to use your own judgment. Choose your candidates carefully. Whatever your preference, we urge you to go to the polls and vote. It is your duty and privilege.
