Cheers & Jeers
Cheers to the Central Greene Scholarship Trust that, on Oct. 12 at the Central Greene High School Cafeteria, will host its 7th-annual trivia contest. The friendly competition’s goal is to raise money for both county charities and scholarships for students in the county’s five school districts. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the competition starts at 6. Mike Camilli, Central Greene math teacher and CGST executive director, said each team gets to designate a charity of choice. The teams that come in first, second and third place will win for their charities $1,000, $500 and $250, respectively. During the event, additional money is raised through a bake sale, a series of Chinese auctions and a 50-50 drawing. “Originally, we awarded scholarships to just students at Central Greene,” Camilli said. “However, our success is what allows us to present scholarships to students in all five school districts.” Over the past six years, the contest has awarded thirty-nine $500 scholarships to county students for a total of $19,500. More than $15,000 has also been awarded local charities, the vast majority of which are based in Greene County.
Cheers to South Union Township officials for taking steps to address flooding concerns for residents who live on upper and lower Ruble Driver and Wiggins Lane. Supervisors are applying for a $381,215 grant from the state to make storm sewer improvements in that area, which has been heavily hit by flooding due to its antiquated stormwater system. While cautioning residents that no system will handle rain like the storm on July 21 that caused flooding in that area, supervisors said securing the grant to make improvements could help with other, less severe rains.
Cheers to three area high school girls soccer players who each recently scored their 100th career goal. The latest to hit the century mark was Connellsville senior Callie Cunningham, who netted three goals in a 7-1 win over Hempfield on the Lady Falcons senior night Wednesday. Last Thursday Waynesburg Central junior Rhea Kijowski put in her 100th career goal in a 9-0 win over Laurel Highlands as she became the second Lady Raider to accomplish the feat while also becoming the fastest in school history to 100. Bentworth’s Paige Marshalek scored her 100th goal in a 13-0 win over Charleroi on Sept. 16. What made each accomplishment a little more special was all three came in a home match.
Cheers to the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) who continuously train and prepare for disasters to help protect citizens in the case of an emergency. The local members of the group joined others across the nation recently to participate in a simulated emergency training exercise. The radio service is important, according to Edward Misciewicz. Fayette County’s ARES emergency coordinator, because in a true emergency, cell phones and other communication can become nonexistent. Our hats are off to the constant work these members do to ensure the care and safety of our residents.
