LETTER: Who’s helping vets now?

2 min read

President Trump has never served in the military, having received a draft deferment in the Vietnam era because of having bone spurs in his heels. We all know of his disdain for those who did serve and died, those “suckers and losers,” and those who were captured. However, in his first term he told reporters he knew of no one who helped the military and veterans more than he. Perhaps so, but that claim can’t be made now as he and his unelected minions are well on their way to firing 80,000 Veterans Affairs workers, many who are veterans.

Interestingly, we have heard nothing about this from Sen. John Fetterman or our junior senator, Dave McCormick, who is a veteran and touted his military service when running for office. In addition, our own representative Guy Reschenthaler has said nothing publicly and he’s also a veteran. Most disturbingly is the unresponsiveness of the Republican apparatchiks in Congress who appear too afraid to speak or just don’t care.

It would be interesting to hear from these government employees, who don’t have to worry about being fired, how eliminating all these people will somehow make the VA and America greater. Their silence is complicity, and it’s deafening.
