LETTER: In support of health care for families
From what I have read, there is another perspective than Betsy McCaughey’s (March 6 op-ed) about the Democrats’ thoughts about what the Republicans want to do to Medicare. What I have heard is that the Republicans’ budget passed in the Republican-controlled Congress wants to fund health care that will turn beneficiaries over to private vendors with no guarantee of a defined benefit package – possibly like UnitedHealth, which is in the news for its heartless claims denials. This could dramatically increase costs to lower-income families. The budget also wants to repeal the ability of Medicare to negotiate drug prices and would gut the children’s portion of the Affordable Health Care Act.
This isn’t to say that Medicare doesn’t need to have some adjustments made. But let’s be honest and get both sides working on a health care plan that supports families and health and not the for-profit health care providers.
