LETTER: A new low for Trump

2 min read

I thought I experienced everything about Donald Trump that illustrated the content of his character, but I was wrong.

Memorial Day is a holiday for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in our armed forces. As such, it’s a somber day for reflection and hope and usually includes an inspirational message to our country from the commander-in-chief. Well, we got one this year and I encourage everyone to read it. For those who’d rather not, you will miss that it said nothing about fallen soldiers or memorials. It did, however, rail against those whom he dislikes as “scum,” federal judges as “monsters,” and immigrants as insane criminals.

In short, it was disgusting and deranged, but this is the measure of the man and it’s sad. We have so much for which to be thankful from the sacrifice of those who gave their lives, but evidently our president equated his vitriolic, narcissistic ranting with patriotism, which it wasn’t. It also wasn’t a demonstration of leadership but rather an insult to those for whom the day was intended.

It was, however, a new low point for Donald Trump.
