ABATE members active locally and statewide
Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education (ABATE) was established in Pennsylvania in 1983.
One of the chapters in Fayette County is River Valley. Meetings are held the second Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at Scott’s Pizzeria, Route 40, Brownsville.
“We stand up and protect the rights of motorcyclists through public relations, lobbying and we also hold charity events,” said Bob Pfrogner, president.
One of many projects ABATE members participates in is Operation Save a Life.
“We go into local schools and teach the students about motorcycle awareness,” he said.
“We also lobby in Harrisburg, representing bikers throughout Pennsylvania. ABATE also helps raise money for many charities in the state and the nation.”
Owning a bike is not necessary to become a member. Anyone is welcome to join. A monthly newsletter is sent out to members with listings of upcoming activities and legislative happenings at the state capital.
Members also hold pool tournaments, state legislative seminars and other events, such as participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, and the bi-yearly cleanup of Route 166 in Redstone Township, where the local group has been a 10-year supporter. Also, memorial runs are held to honor deceased members.
This year, the local group is adding more fun events ranging from dinner runs to movie nights.
“River Valley members also support and attend the events hosted by the state and other chapters in the state,” he said.
