The Hopwood Villagers recently elected new officers as the volunteer group prepares for the National Road Festival and plans other activities. From left are Michael Rohm, vice chairman; Lawren Dunn, chairwoman; and Mary Lynn Longley, secretary/treasurer.

The Hopwood Villagers are ionviting everyone to celebrate the National Road Festival with a day of activities planned along the village’s stretch of historic Route 40.

Lawren Dunn, chairwoman of the group, said that there is something for everyone on Saturday, May 19.

“We’re having childrens’ activities, a parade, the crowning of the king and queen and sellers,” Dunn said.

The wagon train, led by wagon master Doc Sherry, is scheduled to arrive in the grassy knoll behind the Hopwood Fitness Center around noon.

In their second year organizing the National Road activities, the Hopwood Villagers replaced the Hopwood Village Project organization, which undertook a $1.2 million street scape project in 2008.

Dunn said vendors, groups and others will be set up on Route 40. The Hopwood Villagers also sought out people who wanted to set up displays, or do demonstrations, to participate in the annual celebration.

Dunn said the festival usually attracts several hundred people to the historic mountainside village.

The king and queen of Hopwood will be crowned at 11 a.m., and lineup for the Pike Days parade is at noon by the fire department’s social hall. The parade itself will begin around 1 p.m.

The parade will feature school groups, marching bands or organizations, she said.

Dunn said that anyone who needs additional information can call her at 724-366-1510.
