World’s strongest clown to perform at the Fayette County Fair
Tommy Toman has been a professional baseball player, a physical education teacher, a bodybuilder and a marathon runner. But, he found his niche as Buffo the clown.
This gentle giant is known as the world’s strongest clown, a role that has been played for more than 30 years, according to his website.
Weighing in at more than 200 pounds, with arms bigger than the average mans thigh. Buffo juggles bowling balls, hatchets, meat cleavers, fire and chain saws. He rips telephone books in half and balances extension ladders and children in chairs on his face. He lies on a bed of nails buried under a stack of cement blocks, and walks on machetes in his bare feet.
He can make animals appear and disappear. He can escape from chains, ropes, handcuffs and a strait jacket. He can unicycle, stilt walk, eat fire, ride a buffalo, and has a little clown car as well as two large clown trucks. He even has a dog that almost does as many tricks as he does.
Toman was drafted out of high school to play professional baseball for the Chicago White Sox organization. He later also played in the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Houston Astros organizations.
After seven years in professional baseball, Toman attended the University of Pittsburgh to focus on health and physical education for special needs children.
Toman taught as a physical education teacher at the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children in Pittsburgh, until he realized he could make more kids smile as a clown something he had loved since high school.
Toman performs around 300 shows a year for all different age groups.
His biggest show was at the annual Easter Egg Roll at The White House where he was invited to perform three times when President George H.W Bush was in office.
The talents of the world’s strongest clown will be showcased at the Fayette County Fair July 30 through August 2. He will be performing in the family area three times a day at 4:15, 5:45 and 7:15 pm.
