Basketball Vaughns has strong outing

Uniontown standout Terrance Vaughns scored seven points, five assists and five rebounds Friday night for the Western Pennsylvania all-stars in the Rising Star Classic held at New Castle High School. The PA all-stars defeated the Eastern Ohio all-stars, 128-115.

George Jr. Republic forward Benson Callier led the Pennsylvania squad with 31 points.

Uniontown foursome plays

The Uniontown trio of Dierre Jenkins, David Winfrey and Chris Jacobs contributed 19 points Saturday to help the South WPIAL All-Stars defeat the North, 117-109, at the Hoops Classic played at the University of Pittsburgh’s Fitzgerald Field House.

The Red Raiders’ Terrance Vaughns took part in the second game, which pitted the USA International All-Stars against the Pennsylvania All-Stars.

Jenkins scored seven points, dished out six assists and made one steal. Winfrey didn’t score, but grabbed seven rebounds with two assists and two steals. Jacobs led the way with 12 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field with two rebounds and four assists.

Laurel Highlands’ Nathan Forse scored four points for the North with three rebounds and two steals.

Vaughns missed all six of his shots for Pennsylvania, which lost 10-5-82, but did contribute six steals and three rebounds.

At halftime of the second game, Winfrey received his award for winning the 3-point contest in Thursday’s skills competition held at Uniontown Senior High School.

J-M duo excels in game

Jefferson-Morgan senior basketball players John Fowler and C.J. Moon recently took part in the Washington-Greene County All-Star Game held at Washington High School.

Fowler scored seven points and pulled down five rebounds, while Moon tossed in 10 points and grabbed 10 boards.

The two played key roles in helping coach Jim Romanus’ Rockets reach the WPIAL playoffs this year.

Football

Trojans name Kuhns coach

Joe Kuhns has been named as the California Trojan head football coach, replacing Romaine Howell after the first-year coach finished 5-4 and a WPIAL playoff berth.

The 32-year old Beth-Center graduate is an art teacher at his alma mater and was a volunteer assistant for Don Bartolomucci in his first coaching job. Kuhns becomes the fourth California coach in as many years.

Wrestling

PSAC honors Koscheck

Waynesburg Central graduate Josh Koscheck has been named PSAC Wrestler of the Year for the third consecutive season. The honor is Koscheck’s fourth in a row after being named the PSAC Rookie of the Year in 1998-99.

The defending NCAA champion at 174 pounds, Koscheck fought through a bulging disk in his neck to finish third at the 2002 championships. He dropped a 6-0 decision to Penn’s Rick Springman in the quarterfinals, but battled back to finish third with a 9-1 win over Oregon State’s Nathan Coy.

Koscheck becomes the Fighting Scots first four-time all-American, finishing with a career mark of 128-17 to rank fourth in career wins and first in career winning percentage.

Baseball

Penn State routs Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Mike DeRenzo, Wes Reohr and Brian Bishop homered, and Mike Watson pitched a four-hitter as Penn State routed Ohio State 14-2 Friday night. Mike Milliron, the No. 9 hitter, went 4-for-5 with three runs scored for the Nittany Lions (11-11, 2-3 Big Ten), who scored three runs in the third, six in the fourth and four in the fifth.

Watson (5-2) allowed two runs, struck out 11 and walked seven in the 150-pitch complete game.

Ohio State starter E.J. Laratta (4-1) was touched for eight runs on six hits and two walks in three innings. Kyle Brown allowed five runs on 14 hits in five innings of relief for the Buckeyes (15-6, 3-2).

Reohr gave Penn State a 2-0 lead in the third with his third homer this season. Doug Dendinger connected for his second home run in the bottom half to make it 2-1.

Milliron, DeRenzo, Clint Eury and Adam Warchal each had RBI singles in the fourth for Penn State as the Nittany Lions went ahead 9-1.

DeRenzo hit a two-run homer, his second, in the fifth. Bishop hit his second homer pinch hitting in the ninth.
