Laurel Highlands suffers tough softball loss to Belle Vernon Brownsville 18, Charleroi 8 – Erie Guerreri had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs to lead the Lady Falcons past the Lady Cougars in Section 3-AA action.

Beth Rioli added a pair of hits, including a double, and two RBIs, while Tara Sassano had two hits, one of which went for three bases. Adrienne Golembiewski added two hits (including a double), Maggie Craig and Samantha Machnic each chipped in two singles and Marci Marchesini stroked a two-base hit.

Lindsey Zidek picked up the win, starting and working six innings. She allowed six hits, walked nine and didn’t strike out a batter.

Nicole Kramer suffered the loss, tossing six innings and allowing 15 hits. She walked 12 and struck out two.

Brownsville (4-3, 3-1) returns to action Monday, traveling to Waynesburg for a 4 p.m. contest. Charleroi dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in section play.

Beth-Center 17, Monessen 1 – Sherri Roberts and Kristi Mazzaferri had two hits and scored three runs apiece as the Lady Bulldogs cruised past Monessen in Section 6-A action.

Mazzaferri also picked up the victory, in the three-inning contest. She allowed three hits and struck out four. She also had the game’s only extra-base hit, a double.

Beth-Center scored twice in the first inning, then exploded for 15 second-inning runs.

Julie Bakewell, Breanne Paletta and Jennifer Grady also scored two runs each.

Amy Lynn suffered the loss, allowing 10 hits in two innings of work.

Beth-Center (6-5, 5-0) hosts Albert Gallatin at 4 p.m. Friday.

Women’s softballBoys tennis

Brownsville 3, Southmoreland 2 – Brownsville swept all three singles matches in defeating Southmoreland in a Section 1-AA clash.

Ryan Minor beat Cameron Lowe at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2, Josh Seelye swept Greg Jaworsky at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Luke Lucostic took care of Nick Cunningham at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0.

The Scotties won both doubles matches as Nathan Booher and Jason Yoder beat Elliott Sally and Ken Hamlin, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1, while Steve Weimer and Max Buchta knocked off Ian Glumac and James Harrison, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.

The Falcons improve to 4-1 overall and 4-0 in section play. The Scotties drop to 3-4 and 2-3.

Brownsville hosts Monessen in a section match at 4 p.m. on Friday.

Connellsville 4, Canon-McMillan 1 – The Falcons took four of five matches en route to an easy Section 5-AAA win over the Big Macs.

Ryan Hornick and Josh Martin won in singles action, while the doubles teams of Steve Lucas-Matt Ratai and Randy Richter-Steve Haines also posted wins.

Hornick defeated Canon-McMillan’s Zack Richards, 6-3, 7-5, while Martin topped Curtis Matthews, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Lucas and Ratai defeated Fisher and Dunn, 6-2, 6-0, while Richter and Haines won, 6-4, 6-4 over Joe Jibletts and Chris Podany.

Connellsville is 9-1 overall and 5-1 in section play. The Falcons return to action Friday, hosting West Mifflin at 3:30 p.m.
