Colonial drops first game; Carmichaels outsted The Colonial 3 American Legion team dropped its first game in the regional tournament, but remains alive in the double-elimination format with a loser’s bracket game today at 1:30 p.m. against Mars.
Bob Schwartbaurer did the job with his arm and bat, leading Shaler to a 9-0 victory over Colonial.
Schwartbaurer struck out nine and walked one in seven strong innings. Bill Bernardo finished the final two innings with two strikeouts and one walk. The winning pitcher was strong at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double and two singles.
Shaler opened the game with a pair of runs against Matt Greene in the top of the first inning, then added single runs in the fourth and sixth. The visitors finished strong with one run in the seventh, two in the eighth and two more in the ninth.
Colonial 3 mustered seven hits against Shaler pitching with Jason Rechichar leading with two singles.
Mars 9, Carmichaels 8 – Mars advanced to today’s game with Colonial 3 when the visitors scored the winning run in the top of the eighth inning and eliminate Carmichaels from the double-elimination tournament.
The teams were tied 2-2 after one inning before Mars moved ahead with four runs in the top of third inning, though Carmichaels rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Mars tallied single runs in the fourth and fifth, but Carmichaels drew to within a run with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Carmichaels (23-10) tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Shane Busti opened the inning with a single, stole second and moved to third on another single. Busti scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
Busti had a double and two singles while Jared Lapkowicz had three singles to lead the Carmichaels attack.
Brian Hart went five innings for the win. Losing pitcher Andy Mazur struck out none and walked three in four innings.
Carmichaels opened the tournament Tuesday with a 6-3 loss to North Allegheny.
