Brownsville sets sights on Section 1-AA crown CONNELLSVILLE – With a roster 10 players deep, Brownsville girls tennis coach Dan LoNigro feels the Lady Falcons will make a run at the Section 1-AA title.
“(From players 1-10) this is one of the most talented teams I’ve had the privilege to coach at Brownsville,” LoNigro said as he watched his girls scrimmage Connellsville. “There’s enough talent where I can move girls around. I can play with the lineup a little bit. I have seven girls pushing for a starting position.”
Senior Gina Pelehac is firmly entrenched at No. 1 singles for the junior-laden lineup.
“Gina Pelehac is etched in stone at No. 1 singles. She was the first girl to go to the WPIAL Doubles Championships from Brownsville (last year),” LoNigro said.
Junior Danielle Davison will play No. 2 singles, then LoNigro said he will probably let the match determine the rest of the lineup.
“Juniors Lindsey Zidek, Ashton Restina and Chelsea DeConcilis along with first-year senior Maggie Craig will push for a starting position. We’ll match the lineup with who we’re playing,” LoNigro said.
After finishing third last year, LoNigro is confident his team can make a run at a playoff berth.
“Greensburg Central Catholic is always the team to beat. Southmoreland lost a couple quality seniors and Mount Pleasant always has a nice team. I think we can sneak one in.”
The remaining schedule of Section 1-AA includes Belle Vernon, Jeannette and Derry. Brownsville opens up the regular season at Connellsville on Tuesday, Aug. 27 and the section schedule on the road at Jeannette two days later.
