Connellsville golfers edge Geibel in season opener The 2002 golf season opened for cross-town rivals Connellsville and Geibel Catholic at Pleasant Valley Country Club on Tuesday.

Connellsville came out victorious with a 232-244 win.

Mike White took home medallist honors for Connellsville as he fired in a low round of 41, while teammate Jeff Nicholson finished one stroke behind.

Matt Mascia had the low round for Geibel with a 44.

“We were looking to improve after our scores at the Fayette Open,” commented Connellsville coach Ken House.

“We need to improve our scores because a 232 will not win a section match this season,” concluded House.

Connellsville will open section play on Thursday against Southmoreland at home, while Geibel travels to California.

Albert Gallatin 189, Waynesburg Central 197 – Albert Gallatin kicked off its golf season with a stellar performance against Waynesburg Central at home.

AG posted its lowest team performance in the history of the golf program and defeated a Waynesburg team that has only lost one exhibition match in the past four seasons.

Waynesburg’s Robert Rohanna fired the low round of 34, and AG’s Josh Oros remained one shot of the pace with a 35. Drew Callahan and Ron Ferlin tied for third place with 36s.

“I thought that we would give them a good match, but I wasn’t sure that we were going to beat them,” remarked AG coach Bernie Wydo.

“Our guys were putting real well today making the 10 to 15 footers for birdies,” added Wydo.

Albert Gallatin opens its regular season against Mount Pleasant at noon on Thursday at Duck Hollow Golf Club. Waynesburg Central opens on the road against Carmichaels.

Brownsville 204, Uniontown 202 – Brownsville’s Josh Seelye and Uniontown’s Zack Rockwell shared medallist honors with a low round of 37 as Brownsville edged out Uniontown in the non-section opener.

Ryan Bashour finished in second place for Brownsville with a round of 38 while Uniontown’s Ryan Hutnick rounded out the top three with a 40.

“Both teams shot pretty solid golf today,” remarked Brownsville coach Mike Sobocinski. “The match was won with the five and six golfers,” Sobocinski added.

Brownsville will open their regular season Thursday against Mapletown at Carmichaels Golf Course. The Red Raiders will travel to Belle Vernon on Thursday at Willowbrook Golf Course.

Fort Cherry 242, Frazier 276 – Fort Cherry handed Frazier its first defeat of the season with an easy win at home.

Fort Cherry’s Alex Markivich had the only round in the 40’s with a low round of 41. Frazier’s John Paull and Fort Cherry’s Brian Mucha tied for the second slot with rounds of 51. Rounding out the top three was Fort Cherry’s Josh Bordo who shot a 52.

Frazier will host Derry on Aug. 26.

Carmichaels 234, Beth-Center 246 – Carmichaels’ Jamie Bandish was medallist with a round of 43 and teammate Jamie Kowalczyk tied Beth-Center’s Chris Sckena for second place with of 45.

“It was a pretty good match today,” commented Beth-Center coach Gene Fox. Beth-Center will play Jeannette on Thursday to start the regular season. Carmichaels will host Waynesburg Central on Thursday
