Wrestling

Ferens at Iowa Central

Years ago, a man in an old advertising slogan claimed he would walk a mile to get this product.

John Ferens did that man a whole lot better, although he used an airline instead of hoofing it. He went halfway across the United States to wrestle.

Ferens, son of John M. Ferens, and the grandson of Mrs. Joseph Ferens, all of Connellsville, is a graduate of Connellsville High School where he wrestled four years for now retired coach Tom Dolde.

As a senior, Ferens finished second in Section 2-AAA competition at 152, advancing from there to the WPIAL, where he was 3-2 overall. He won his opening bout, lost the second and dropped to the consolation round, where he was 2-1. This qualified him for a trip to the state (PIAA) finals at Hershey, where he was 2-2, concluding the season with an overall 31-11 mark and 121 wins for his career.

Ferens then enrolled at the University of Nebraska, which has one of the nation’s top wrestling programs.

This year he is wrestling for Iowa Central Junior College, which has been rated the number one national JC wrestling program. He competes at 149 against collegiate varsity teams from across the nation. After one year at Iowa Central, John will return to Nebraska.
