Uniontown girls win at Trinity in Section 2 action The Uniontown girls basketball team extended its record to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in Section 2-AAAA with a 53-47 road win against Trinity.

Joceyln Chandler had the hot hand for the Lady Red Raiders with 30 points, including one 3-pointer, eight rebounds and two steals while Jill Monahan added 11 points and five assists.

“It’s always good to get a win on the road,” said Uniontown coach Annie Malkowiak. “It’s good to know that even though you’re not playing your best game, you can still get the win, especially on the road. Down the stretch, our girls really came through.”

Chelsea Popeck had the hot hand for Trinity with 12 points and Lindsey Whipkey added 10.

Uniontown will participate in the Disney World Tourney from Dec. 26 through Dec. 31 and will return to action against Laurel Highlands at home on Jan. 3.

Waynesburg Central 55, Southmoreland 49 – Cigi Wright lit up the scoreboard with 26 points and shot 8-of-13 from the foul line as Waynesburg defeated Southmoreland in a Section 3-AAA matchup.

A trio of Southmoreland players landed double-digits. Amanda Buttermore led the way with 12 points, while Kelly Rollinson and Beth Wisniewski added 11 and 10 points.

The Lady Red Raiders will participate in the Waynesburg Tournament on Dec. 27 and Dec. 28. and Southmoreland will play in the Ligonier Valley Tournament on Dec. 27 and Dec. 28

Brownsville 52, Bentworth 29 – Gina Pelahac scored a game-high 18 points and Maggie Craig added 14 points as Brownsville cruised to an easy win over Bentworth.

The Lady Falcons held Bentworth scoreless in the first quarter and never looked back.

Amber Jenkins scored 18 points for Bentworth, including two 3-pointers.

Brownsville plays in the Elizabeth-Forward tournament on Dec. 27 and Dec. 28.

Beth Center 47, Burgettstown 29 – Samantha Slagle led with 18 points as Beth-Center rolled to an easy win over Burgettstown in Section 5-AA action.

Breanne Paletta was the only other player in double digits for B-C with 11 points.

Sally Schilinski led Burgettstown with 13 points.

Beth-Center will host a tournament on Dec. 26 and Dec. 27 and will return to action against Chartiers-Houston on Jan. 2

Boys basketball

Westmar 75, Turkeyfoot Valley 41 – Bobby Alkire led with 21 points and teammates Jason Lee and Kevin Smith added 19 and 12 points as Westmar cruised to the easy win over Turkeyfoot Valley.

Bob Lager was high scorer for Turkeyfoot with nine points and 15 rebounds. Brett Clevenger and Dale Hinzy each had two 3-pointers.

The Rams will participate in the Northern, Md. Tournament on Dec. 27 and Dec. 28.

Boys swimming

Laurel Highlands 93, Belle Vernon 51 – Laurel Highlands remained undefeated at 6-0 with a non-section win over Belle Vernon.

The team of Tony Margaglla, Ziggy Parker, Kevin Collins and Aaron Hunchuck got things started for the Mustangs with a win in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:51.57.

Other LH wins included: Kevin Collins (50 freestyle, 23.53), Dustin Stalnaker (100 butterfly, 58.52) and Will Ashton (500 freestyle, 5:42.71).

Laurel Highlands will host Connellsville on Jan. 2 at 1 p.m.

Girls swimming

Laurel Highlands 96, Belle Vernon 74 – The Laurel Highlands girls swimming team extended their record to 6-0 with a non-section win over Belle Vernon.

Laurel Highlands started off with a win in the 200 medley relay behind the team of Kara Dinsmore, Angela Shotter, Sara Bonchosky and Theresa Reilly (2:07).

Other LH wins included: Bonchosky (100 butterfly, 1:05.30), Keri Smiell (100 free, 59.21) and the team of Dinsmore, Shotter, Smiell and Bonchosky (1:50.34).

The Fillies will also host Connellsville on Jan. 2 at 1 p.m.
