Lady Raiders wind up Disney trip in style
Courtney Sanner’s two free throws forced the game into overtime, then Jocelyn Chandler’s tip-in at the buzzer Monday gave Uniontown a thrilling 64-63 victory over Spring Ford in the third-place game in the KSA Disney Classic. The game bounced back-and-forth, especially in the fourth quarter with at least six lead changes.
Sanner stepped up to the line for a two-shot foul with 3.6 seconds remaining in regulation. The freshman coolly sank both attempts to send the game into an extra five minutes.
Trailing by a point, Uniontown (8-4) had the ball at halfcourt. Chandler was at the right spot, tipping in a missed shot at the buzzer. After some discussion, the officials ruled the shot was good.
Chandler had another strong all-around effort with 34 points, 21 rebounds and four assists. Emily Fisher scored 14 points with Sara Kovach contributing nine points and eight rebounds. Jill Monahan led the floor game with five assists.
According to Uniontown girls coach Annie Malkowiak, the victory topped a positive experience for the entire Lady Red Raider squad.
“It was a great experience for the kids and the coaches. (The overtime win) is a bit of a momentum swing for us. We kept our composure. It’s refreshing for me to know that as we get ready for Laurel Highlands,” Malkowiak said.
“Neither team had a lead of more than two, three points in the second half. The second half went back and forth.”
Uniontown hosts Laurel Highlands on Thursday in Section 2-AAAA action.
