Bud Murphy’s holds off Mill run

By Jim Kriek For The 3 min read

BREAKNECK – Bud Murphy’s “Ship” came in, with a big win as its cargo. Brian Shipley hit a grandslam, a double, and drove in five runs as Bud Murphy’s tripped visiting Mill Run, 6-4, in their big Fayette County Baseball League meeting Sunday.

The win left Bud’s 20-3, and owning a four-game lead in the won-loss column over Mill Run (16-7-1) in their race for East Division honors and spots in the forthcoming playoffs.

Lefthander Tony Rose, who has never lost to Mill Run, pitched until one out in the seventh, when Mill Run kicked up some dust with Dennis Show and Chris Firestone singles.

Matt Basinger came on in relief to get two outs and preserve the decision for Rose.

Manager Tom Sankovich said, “Tony pitched a fine game, and he wanted to stay in to the end. But he has pitched only three games all year, and we had a strong arm on the bench for relief in Basinger.”

Bud’s jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first two innings, before Mill Run moved back in mid-game.

Sankovich added, “We got a big jump on them, but then they came back. You can’t give Mill Run one opening, for if you do they will come back on you. (Dale) Eutsey was tough for them after the second inning. He shut us out after we went up 6-0 in the second.”

Bud’s had five hits, but only one after the second inning, Mark Edenfield’s single with two down in the sixth.

After Shipley’s double in the second, Bud’s had only two baserunners: Brian Sankovich when he was hit by a pitch leading off the fifth and erased on the front end of a double play, and Edenfield’s single in the sixth.

Mill Run manager Bugs Orndorff said, “We had one bad inning, the first, and it hurt us. After the second, Eutsey pitched tough, he didn’t give them anything and he struck out some big guns. They got out ahead of us early, but then we came back.”

Dennis Show had a double and two singles and Rich Orndorff added a double and single, as they shared half of Mill Run’s hits. Dan Gratchic hit a three-run homer to start the comeback, and Jeremy Miller doubled.

Eutsey walked only two batters, Joe Bonadio and Sankovich, both in the first inning, around Josh Delander’s single to load the bases. Shipley then hit the first pitch over the left-center fence for a 4-0 lead.

That went to 6-0 in the second when Bob Showman was nicked by a pitch, Bonadio singled, and Shipley doubled after a double play.

Mill Run cut that to 6-3 in the fourth. John Warrick singled to lead off, and with two out Orndorff doubled him to third. Then Gratchic hit into the leftfield trees. Show and Miller doubles added the last run in the fifth.

Mill Run is at home Tuesday with Connellsville, and Wednesday with Fayette City-Belle Vernon, then goes to FC-BV Thursday.

Bud’s plays Wednesday at Brownsville, Friday at Carmichaels, then hosts Carmichaels Saturday in a makeup.
