Carmichaels, Masontown advance to next playoff round Anthony Crane at Masontown

Jim Kubina went 4 for 4 and knocked in three runs, while Scott VanSickle and Clint Zvolensky homered to lift Masontown past Anthony Crane, 10-3, and give Masontown a 2-1 series win.

After having its bats stifled in the opening game, Masontown came back to score nine runs in Game 2 Monday night and 10 Tuesday.

“It was a tough series,” Zvolensky, Masontown’s manger said.

“Their guys are scrappy and they don’t go away. It was back and forth all series.”

Masontown will travel to defending champion Bud Murphy’s Thursday night for Game 1 of their semifinal series. The game begins at 6 p.m.

Rain had an effect on the game as well, delaying it for roughly 15 minutes at the start of the bottom of the fourth and then forcing the game to be called after six innings.

Jim Cole picked up the victory, scattering seven hits over six innings. He struck out five and walked two.

Among Kubina’s four hits were two doubles, and Brad Baker and Cole also had two hits each.

VanSickle’s home run, his sixth of the season, came with the bases empty in the first inning, while Zvolensky cracked his first homer of the year, a two-run blast, with one out in the fifth.

Jeff Crable suffered the loss in relief of Jim Highburger, who last just 2/3 of an inning.

Highburger allowed two runs on three hits, while Crable was tagged for 10 hits and eight runs.

Bill Rouse and Jason Greene doubled for Anthony Crane.
