WPIAL baseball/softball roundup
Mt. Lebanon’s Chris Koutsavlis wasn’t perfect Friday, but he pitched a gem of a game to carry the Blue Devils to a 2-0 victory over Blackhawk to win the WPIAL Class AAA Baseball Championship played at PNC Park. Koutsavlis (10-0) hurled a no-hitter, striking out seven and walking four.
Despite the zero in the hit column, the Cougars had base runners in four of the seven innings but were unable to crack the scoreboard.
Mt. Lebanon scored single runs in the third and fifth innings.
Washington 9, South Park 4 – The Little Prexies rallied from a 4-3 deficit with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win the WPIAL Class AA Baseball Championship.
Justin Gregula led the Washington offense with a single, a bases-loaded triple and four RBIs. The Prexies received single RBIs from Brian Skaggs, Dale Calloway and Brian Binder. Ty Linck finished 3-for-4.
Binder (8-0) pitched 6-1/3 innings for the win, striking out seven and walking only one.
Ivan Braszo went 2-for-3 for South Park. The two teams combined for 12 errors.
Neshannock 4, Greensburg Central Catholic 3 – The Centurions held a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Lancers scored three runs and then held Greensburg Central Catholic scoreless in the final two innings to win the WPIAL Class A Baseball Championship.
Brian Chrobak led the Neshannock offense, going 3-for-3 with a run scored.
Bobby Glass (6-0) went the distance for the Lancers, giving up eight hits and three runs (two earned), striking out four and walking two.
Softball
Thomas Jefferson 3, Ellwood City 2 – Thomas Jefferson scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday to win the WPIAL Class AA third-place consolation game and advance into Monday’s PIAA playoffs.
Thomas Jefferson went ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning, but Ellwood City tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.
Chartiers-Houston 8, Burgettstown 1 – The Blue Devils had four errors and Chartiers-Houston pounded out 10 hits to advance into the PIAA playoffs with a victory in the WPIAL Class A third-place consolation game.
Casey Kapis and Colleen Kelly both doubled for the Lady Bucs.
Chartiers-Houston scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning, then added a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Burgettstown scored its lone tally in the top of the sixth inning.
